RIDING 101

THE PEDICAB LIFESTYLE

Before jumping on board with Santa Monica Pedicab, we really want you to know the basics of what you'd be getting into. It seems a lot of fun (because it truly is) but pedicabbing can also be challenging. Please take a moment to learn some principles of this job.

You're your boss

All riders are independent operators which means you would rent the pedicab but then manage your micro-business on the streets in your own fashion (within the rules and requirements of the City of Santa Monica, of course).

One of the advantages of riding with Santa Monica Pedicab is that we fully train you to understand the basics and learn the techniques that make each driver successful.

This is hard labor

Pedicabbing inspires frequent laughter but is also hard work - really hard work.

Don't kid yourself: riding a trike is different from "fitness exercise." This is both a labor and talentjob and as such demands you pay attention to both your physical and mental health. On most days labor this fun hardly seems like labor at all!

Most riders will tell you that pedicabbing is unlike any sort of pedal-powered riding they have ever done. Even experienced cyclists are surprised by the differences between riding three wheels versus two.

Most adapt to the intensity of pedicab within two to four weeks. Even the smaller folks manage to rock the trike pretty quickly!

Physical strength is essential

The pedicabs have variable gearing ratios to assist with towing and/or climbing small hills. Regardless, a certain amount of leg strength is required. A healthy diet, including frequent hydration, is very important.

Operators also need to be able to lower and lift a pedicab onto it's rear in order to access and store the vehicle. If you are able to lift 45 lbs. over your head, you will no problem with this.

Big personality, big profits

More than the body, pedicabbing relies on personality. This is because while the execution of the job requires physical work, earnings rely on social skill.

As a new rider, keep in mind that it takes a little time to generate the specific knack for the sales portion of this job.

Successful ride sales techniques are varied; the current tribe of pedicabbers has evolved these tactics over the last five years. While you'll be encouraged to experiment with your own sales style, every veteran rider can offer guidance so don't be afraid to ask questions!

Santa Monica Pedicab is at your side

Santa Monica Pedicab books special events and has an infrastructure to help you occasionally procure additional tours.

We will supply many tools to make you the best rider you can be.

Key skills for the job

Once on the road, things can become unpredictable quickly. Pedicab operators work with people and with dynamic road conditions, which means a scene can change suddenly. While most shifts are calm, others can be chaotic with change.

Being ready for this challenge requires having four key skills:

  • Strong sense of humor
  • Ability and willingness to work with others, especially those very different from yourself
  • Improvisation under shifting conditions
  • Staying calm in high-pressure scenarios

We're eager for you to tell us why you think you'd be a good pedicabber. We want to share with you our culture, encourage your unique skill set, and ride alongside you. We're looking forward to hearing from you soon!
